Just because the cooler temperatures are sneaking up on us, doesn’t mean you have to put away your gardening gloves and tools just yet! Fall is an incredible time to get some serious work done in your garden. If you’re thinking about selling your home in the Spring these are some extra little touches that could really set your home apart from the others on the market!
Whether you’re looking to beautify your forever home or get your house ready to list (we can help you with that too!) Here are some of the items that are best planted from September onwards!
Spring Blooming Bulbs:
This is a great time of year to find deals on spring blooming bulbs like tulips, hyacinths or daffodils. These bulbs come in a wide variety of colour and heights so you can really choose what will work best for your garden! These bulbs need a period of cold to develop their root systems before the ground completely freezes, so while you won’t be able to enjoy the beauty of these right away, the hard work in the Fall is so worth it when they bloom in the Spring!
Grass:
Did the hot summer temperatures do a number to your lawn? Have no fear! Fall is a great time to lay grass seed. If you’re looking to improve a patchy or sparse lawn, simply rake these spots until you expose soil, sprinkle the seed, cover lightly with straw, and water regularly until freezing temperatures arrive. Come the spring and summer months your lawn will be picnic ready!
Perennials:
Fall is a great time to plant new, or divide and replant any existing perennials you have! These include plants like hostas or astilbe. It’s important to keep these well watered until the ground freezes so they can establish good healthy roots! Once the temperature really starts to drop, you can surround these with several inches of mulch. When spring rolls around these will be ready to provide beautiful greenery in your garden!
Garlic:
Fall is the best time to plant garlic! You should be aiming to plant garlic about 4 weeks before the ground freezes so around Thanksgiving weekend is a good time marker for this. Once you have your garlic bulb, you should split it into individual cloves and plant these 2-4 inches deep and 6-8 inches apart from each other. Cover the area with mulch and keep an eye on any weeds that may sprout through the mulch and pull these. Fast forward to August and your garlic will be ready to harvest! While this seems like a long time to wait, just think about all the amazing meals you can make with fresh garlic from your very own garden!
The most important thing with fall planting, is to not over fertilize too close to the ground freezing! If you over fertilize, the plant will be encouraged to keep growing rather than prepare itself for the cold winter months.
Are you flexing your green thumb this fall in order to list your home in the spring?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
